Sarah and I met in Provence France, while working as bike-tour guides for a company called Backroads. We worked as guides for a number of years before moving to the Boston area to settle down and start a family. Even though we settled for a more conventional life-style, ie, a 9-5, mortgage, and in our case, 2 kids, we still tried to participate in the activity that brought us together - cycling.
Our love for cycling had taken us on a few bike trips, across the US, across Mexico, and a long trip from Alaska to Argentina. We knew we wanted to introduce this to our kids. We "encouraged" our daughters to learn to ride from about the age of 2-3. When they were about 5 and 6 we purchased two Co-Motion Periscope tandems. We took them on a bunch of organized rides in the area, and a few longer adventures like biking to Cape Cod for a long weekend.
This whole time, we had been thinking about taking our daughters on an epic trip, but we just needed to figure out how, when, and where. We are lucky enough to have gotten 2 months off from our employers, so we decided to bike across America. Seeing how our first trip really changed our perspective on life, we hope this trip can shape this family's perspective, yet again!
